Engagement Session Guide ::: Why do an engagement session?

I always get asked by wedding clients if an engagement session is something they should do, and if it's possible, I always say yes and, I always include a free engagement session with any full coverage wedding.

They are just a great way to get to know your photographer and get some great images to share with family and friends, a stress-free way to get used to being in front of a camera and they are just fun. Every photographer is different and, one thing I always let my future brides and grooms know is that the first 5-10 minutes of the session may feel weird, but once we get going, it will be fine. It takes any stress of photography away on the wedding day for most couples.

It's great to show up to a wedding and be very familiar with your photographer and, it's great for me to have previously met my clients so that it's not just a "photographer" showing up...it's Scott!

I know that because Cape Breton has become such a destination wedding location that it's not always possible to arrange a session, but if we can make it happen, let's do it!

As for a guide, here are my tips:

I always find clients are so much more comfortable if they're wearing clothes they feel confident and comfortable in, don't test out those new super high jeans, go for something you've worn before and you know you feel good in.

Go for loose, flowy, natural fabrics like linen, cotton, etc that will move with you.

Neutral, earthy colors such as beige, grey, white, black, denim, rust, mustard, blush, blue all look beautiful in the locations I generally shoot in.

Avoid large prints, patterns, and any large graphics or logos.

Avoid being too matchy, matchy. Ideally, your outfits will compliment each other but not blend into each other.
